What this is

The Gnosis Room is a free timer for getting a quiet head before a working. It offers five calm methods in your browser: box breath, 4-7-8, a slow count, a single point and a body sweep. It ends with a plain thank you.

How the Gnosis Room works

Gnosis is chaos magic's name for a mind that has stopped arguing and settled on one point. The sigil method needs it, because a mark charged without it is a doodle you looked at hard. It doesn't last. Seconds, a few minutes at most. You want a gap, and a short one counts.

Pick one of five methods. Box breath and 4-7-8 pace you with a ring and a count. Slow count runs down from 100 by threes. Single point holds one soft light in view. Body sweep walks your attention from the feet to the crown. Set one, three, five or ten minutes and press Begin.

Breath, counting and attention are the whole kit. There's no fasting, no going without sleep, no pain and no drugs, and nothing in here will ask for them. Stop if you feel dizzy. If the holds are uncomfortable, shorten them or switch them off, and with a breathing or heart condition skip them altogether.

Stay with one method for a month before you switch. Note each sitting in the Log if you like, minutes only. A dozen workings in, you can put the methods side by side and see which ones came before a result. Keep that one. Even if it's the boring one. The longer reading is gnosis: ways to get there.

Gnosis questions

What is gnosis in chaos magic?

A state where the mind stops arguing and holds one point. The earliest chaos magic books, Liber Null and The Book of Results, both 1978, use the word for it. It's the Greek word for knowledge, picked up secondhand like most of the kit.

What are the types of gnosis?

The sources sort methods into two groups. Inhibitory methods work by stillness, such as slow breathing and relaxation. Ecstatic methods work by intense arousal. Both lists include things that can hurt you, so this site teaches only the calm end of the first.

How do you achieve gnosis?

Slow your breathing, rest your attention on one thing and bring it back each time it wanders. Count, hold a soft light in view, or sweep your attention up the body. The Room has five calm ways. Pick one and give it a month.

How long does gnosis last?

Seconds. Sometimes a few minutes. The sitting runs longer than the state, because most of it is getting there. The timer here goes to ten minutes, and most sittings need one to five.

Is gnosis in chaos magic the same as Gnosticism?

No. Chaos magic borrowed the word for a one-pointed state. It makes no claim about the Gnostic religions, and the sources note the word was applied with no etymological justification. This page is only about the state.

Is the Gnosis Room safe?

It uses only breath, counting and attention. Stop if you feel dizzy. If holding your breath is uncomfortable, shorten the holds or skip them, and with a breathing or heart condition switch them off. If a practice makes your sleep or mood worse, stop and talk to a person.
