What this is

The Name Sigil is a free tool that turns a name into one seal by the wheel, grid or monogram method. Use it on your own name, a pen name, a project or a pet. It runs in your browser and saves the seal as SVG or PNG.

How the Name Sigil works

Type a name. The letters orbit the ring once, merge and settle into a single mark. A name carries no order, so there's nothing to forget. The vowels stay in by default for the same reason. Untick Keep the vowels to cut them, and tick Keep repeated letters to keep every last one.

Pick a drawing method. Wheel traces the letters round a ring of 26. Grid runs them through a five by five square. Monogram stacks them into one glyph you can turn and flip. Reroll and the same name gets a new layout every time. Keep the one you like looking at, since you'll be looking at it a lot.

Save it as SVG or PNG. White on clear is for a stencil or a screen, black on white for print and cutting, and silver on black for a lock screen. The copied link carries the layout and nothing else, so your name never travels with it.

A seal made from a name is a signature with ambitions. It turns into a working the day you give it a job. Write that job as one sentence in the sigil generator, and read how to make a sigil first.

Sigil out of your name: questions

How do you make a sigil out of your name?

Write the name, decide which letters to cut, and draw what's left as one mark. The method is Austin Osman Spare's, from The Book of Pleasure, 1913: combine the letters of a sentence into one simplified mark. This tool does the combining and the drawing, then saves the seal.

Should I keep the vowels in a name sigil?

Keep them. A name is short, and without its vowels it's down to a handful of strokes. The Foundry cuts vowels because an intent has to stop reading as a want, and a name has no want in it. The switch is there if you like a barer mark.

Can I make a family sigil?

Type the family name, or run each person's name and compare the seals. Then settle on one layout. The layout link rebuilds the same wheel or square for anyone you send it to, so each person adds their own name and gets a seal that matches the set.

How do you say sigil?

SIJ-il. Soft g, as in giant. Some people say SIJ-ul. The dictionaries take both.

Does a name sigil need charging?

Only if you give it a job. As a signature or a logo? Nothing. For a job, write it as a sentence in the sigil generator, which runs the breath timer and the forgetting.

Is my name sent anywhere?

No. It runs in your browser and the name never leaves the page. Saved files hold the drawing, the layout link holds the layout, and neither has a letter of your name in it.
