Forget the sigil or it won't work
Most failed sigils got charged fine. They got checked.
You make the mark, you charge it, you burn it. That night you wonder if it took. The next morning you wonder again. By day three you are scanning the week for signs. You are running the want you meant to put down, in slow motion.
What the method asks for
Austin Osman Spare published The Book of Pleasure (Self-Love): The Psychology of Ecstasy in 1913. In it, the letters of a statement are combined into a glyph, and the glyph is then forgotten. Forgetting sits inside the procedure. It is a step, with the same weight as the drawing.
Peter J. Carroll gives the reasoning in Liber Null. "The mere act of wanting is rarely effective, as the will becomes involved in a dialogue with the mind." Four sentences on: "Often the wished for result arises only when it has been forgotten." The next sentence calls that "the key to sigils and most forms of magic spell."
The key, he says. He does not file it under tips.
I covered where the idea came from in Spare found that wanting gets in the way. This post is about the part people skip. Nobody has measured any of it, so run it as a model with a cheap test attached. A held want starts a second process. That process argues. Every check reopens the instruction and lets the argument edit it.
The sigil compresses the sentence until there is nothing left to argue with. A check decompresses it.
What forgetting looks like
Trying to forget is thinking about it with extra steps. Three moves work better, and they stack.
Shoal it. Make several sigils for several aims, charge them together, release them as one batch. You cannot hover over six glyphs the way you hover over one. After a day you will not know which mark was for what. The shoal buries the one you would have watched. The Shoal tool takes up to six intents, shuffles the glyphs, and treats them as a single batch. The shoaling guide has the full method.
Delay the look. Put a read date in the log before you make the mark. A month out is fine. Then do not open the log until that date. The date is what lets you stop. Without one, your head keeps the appointment for you, every night.
Burn it or bin it. Destroy the mark so the paper cannot pull you back. Fold it into a drawer if burning is a problem where you live. The glyph leaves your sight.
After the charge, give your hands a job. Dishes, a walk, a game that needs both thumbs. A busy, boring hour beats a clean mind. Nothing needs emptying. The process just needs something else to chew.
The check that breaks it
Here is the part people argue about. Checking feels like diligence. It looks like what a careful person would do, and that is why it survives.
A check at day two rereads the aim, which wakes the want. It grades a two-day-old working against a result that has had two days. Then it hands you a verdict, usually "nothing yet," and you act on it. You tweak the sigil. You add a second one. You run it again.
Now a dozen workings sit stacked on one want, each carrying the worry of the last. That is a corrupted packet, resent until the line clogs.
Sign hunting is the same habit in a nicer coat. A number on a clock, a song in a shop, a stranger saying the word. What you caught is yourself, still holding the want. Logging every coincidence as proof keeps the line open, and an open line is the whole problem.
Compare the person who wrote a date and walked away. On that day they read the aim as written and mark it held, partly, or nothing. They cannot rewrite it, because it was fixed before anything happened. Their data is clean. Yours is a pile of edits.
If you think I have this backwards, argue it. The best case against says forgetting is superstition dressed as method, and a sigil you track closely teaches you more. Fair. Run both. Same type of aim, same charge, one forgotten and one checked daily, both logged to the same read date. Report what happened, including the misses.
Limits
Forgetting a sigil does not mean forgetting your life. If the aim is a job, you still apply. If it is your health, you still see the doctor. If a working leaves you anxious, low, or sleepless for days, stop running it and talk to someone qualified. A sigil is never a substitute for care you need.
Do it
Open the Sigil Foundry for one working, or Shoal for a batch. Set the read date. Burn the mark. Close the tab.
Checked yours daily and it hit anyway? Bring the log to The Pit and make the case.
