Is chaos magic dangerous? The real risks and the movie ones
Is chaos magic dangerous? Yes, a little, and not in the way the movies say. Nothing crawls out of a sigil. People get hurt in duller ways, and every one of them can be seen coming.
The movie risks
Demons that follow you home. A curse that kills a rival. A circle that breaks and lets something in. Drop all of it. Nothing on this site asks you to believe in a monster that you then have to survive, and a glyph on paper does not kill anyone. If a seller tells you the danger is spirits, the product on the next line is protection from spirits.
Fear of the supernatural is the cheapest thing to sell. It is also the least likely thing to harm you.
The real risks
Obsession. A working is a request you keep an eye on. Checking it every hour turns it into a background process that eats your day. If a sigil takes up more of your attention than the thing it was aimed at, kill the process and stop. Every working you run needs an end date. Write it down before you start.
Changing beliefs while fragile. Chaos magic treats belief as a tool you pick up and put down. That is the point of it, and it is also why it is a bad month to start if you are not sleeping, grieving, in withdrawal, or coming off a crisis. Shaking your own models when the floor is already moving can end badly. Wait. The practice will still be here.
The same goes for anyone who has been told they are prone to psychosis or mania. Do not experiment with altered states, sleep loss or intense ritual without your doctor knowing about it.
Isolation. A practice done alone, in secret, at night, tends to shrink your life. Watch the log for it. If you are seeing fewer people than you were a month ago, that is data. Tell someone what you are doing. A skeptical friend is better than none.
Money and time. There is a whole shop floor of paid courses, initiations, ranks and sacred tools. You need a notebook and a pen. Treat any price tag attached to the real version as a warning, and be extra suspicious of an expiring discount. Nothing time-limited is part of this.
Bad teachers. Anyone who wants you dependent on them is the hazard. Watch for these: a rank you have to pay to climb, a secret you cannot check, a demand that you cut off people who doubt, and a teacher who answers a question about method by questioning your faith. A good teacher gives you a procedure you can test and lets you leave. If you cannot leave cleanly, that is your answer.
What Carroll warned about
Peter J. Carroll's Liber Null opens with an author's note. It says the book was written for the serious occult student and contains powerful rituals. It says the exercises are for readers in good health, and it tells anyone with heart disease, epilepsy or any chronic disease not to use the material. The man who wrote the book took his own methods seriously. Do the same.
The gnosis techniques are the real physical load: breath work, exhaustion, strobing lights, extreme noise. Those can hurt a body. Stay inside what you would do on an ordinary evening. Stop at dizziness, pain or numbness. See a doctor first if you have a condition.
Guardrails
- Start small. Pick wants that cost you nothing if they miss.
- Keep a log with dates and an exit for every working. The log is the only instrument.
- Aim at your own life. Leave other people's bodies, health, money and minds alone.
- Sleep, eat, and see people. A practice that costs you any of those is set too high.
- Pay for nothing until you have run a month on a notebook.
- Tell one person you trust. Pick a friend over a teacher.
- If a working leaves you frightened or unable to sleep, stop for a week.
When to stop and call someone
If you are in crisis, or thinking about hurting yourself, close this page and talk to a professional. In the US, call or text 988, the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. Magick is not treatment and it does not replace it. If you are on medication, do not change it because of a working.
A notebook, a small want and a person who knows what you are doing is about as risky as taking up the bass guitar. The risks show up when you add secrecy, money, a guru or an already shaky head.
Think this list is too soft, or too hard? Bring your log to The Pit and argue it.
